(Anchorage) – In favor of protecting king salmon and future fishing opportunities, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is implementing a sport fishing regulation change on Ship Creek. Effective 6:00 a.m. Friday, July 3 through 11:59 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2026, Ship Creek is closed to sport fishing from its mouth upstream to a cable 100 feet downstream of the Chugach Power Plant Dam.
Ship Creek will open back up to sport fishing at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14. Upon reopening, retention of king salmon will remain prohibited.
“Recent stream surveys indicate that king salmon returns are tracking below levels needed to confidently meet hatchery broodstock goals,” stated Area Management Biologist Brittany Blain-Roth. “Broodstock goals for Ship Creek include broodstock for other fisheries throughout Southcentral Alaska. While we are confident we have enough broodstock for Ship Creek, surveys do not indicate enough fish inriver to ensure adequate broodstock for other terminal fisheries that Ship Creek supports.” ADF&G staff will continue to monitor escapement as king salmon return to the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery and reopen the fishery if improvements are observed.
