Fish Pathology Laboratory
Hatchery Support
The Fish Pathology Laboratories (FPL) supervise fish health activities for about 33 Alaskan salmon hatcheries, more than 40 shellfish farms, 4 shellfish nurseries, and 2 shellfish hatcheries. This includes annual hatchery inspections, assisting hatchery personnel with field sampling, and conducting workshops in finfish and shellfish disease recognition. This fish health oversight also includes reviewing over 200 finfish and shellfish transport permits annually to manage disease risks and protect wild and hatchery stocks. The FPL also develops fish health policies and regulations to monitor and control fish diseases in accordance with state statutes. Lastly, the FPL provides diagnostic and consultation services to hatchery programs to control fish diseases by recommending appropriate preventative measures and treatment whenever there is reported increases in morbidity or mortality. This no-cost diagnostic service is available to all users, including the public as well as private, governmental, and educational facilities.
