Karluk Adult Chinook Salmon Spawning Abundance

Adult Chinook salmon mark-recapture and age, sex and length studies. The Karluk River is one of the largest Chinook salmon producers in the Kodiak Management Area and fish are targeted by sport and subsistence fisheries, but are also presumed to be harvested incidentally in the commercial fishery targeting sockeye salmon. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has operated a weir on the Karluk River to count returning salmon roughly since the 1920s. Age, sex, and length composition information was collected at the weir between 1986 and 2007 but funding was discontinued after 2007. In 2014, sampling for this information will once again occur allowing for estimates of age, sex, and length composition of Chinook salmon allowing for run reconstruction.
